Pervasive media is about the different ways experiences can be provided. This could include forming experiences based on the current context (for example the user's location or time of day), making use of user generated content, or creating new delivery channels. Happy Packages aims to bring these ideas together in a mobile application.

Originally we explored the use of text messaging, bluetooth delivery, and GPS applications to research how pervasive experiences can be delivered to the user and what their response would be. One of our prototype applications that we felt was strongest was Happy Trail gadget that ran on mobile devices. On a companion website users can create completely custom trails for their friends which send them to real world locations with clues and pictures. The friend receives a text message alert and then can download the trail to be read and followed on the mobile application, which takes advantage of GPS. By following the trail to the secret locations, the player is rewarded with personal messages.

At the Media Sandbox open day, Happy Packages was picked from all the commissioned projects for further funding by a panel of industry experts because of it’s potential. Via focus groups, trials, and brainstorming sessions, the  issues with the prototype are being addressed, and a new application is being developed for the iPhone.
